The second China–ASEAN Digital Agriculture Forum convened in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, on Sept. 20, 2024. Participants shared experiences, exchanged insights, and discussed strategies to jointly advance the digital transformation and upgrading of agriculture.    

China and ASEAN have all along maintained a sound partnership in agricultural  cooperation. In September 2023, the 26th China–ASEAN Summit issued the China–ASEAN Joint Statement on Deepening Agricultural Cooperation, which outlined the cooperation strategy in smart agriculture and digital villages. Participants agreed that digital and smart technologies are the crucial engine for transforming and upgrading traditional agriculture, fostering new-quality productive forces, and providing significant impetus for regional agricultural and rural development.  

Representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Cambodia, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation of Myanmar, the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives of Thailand, and the Ministry of Agriculture of Indonesia shared their perspectives on the development of smart agriculture. They expressed their desire to enhance cooperation with China, promoting the adoption of digital technologies in agriculture, ensuring that such technologies are accessible to more farmers, and ultimately improving agricultural quality and efficiency. 

Supported by the Sichuan Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and the People’s Government of Chengdu Municipality, the forum was organized by MARA Foreign Economic Cooperation Center. The event brought together officials from agriculture ministries of ASEAN countries, diplomats from embassies of ASEAN countries to China, representatives from international organizations such as the FAO, WFP, scholars from Mekong Institute, as well as officials, experts and executives from competent agricultural departments, research institutes, and companies of 18 provincial-level regions in China, including Sichuan, Shandong, Guangdong, and Guangxi.
